Judson Howie Welcomes Law Student Jeffrey Marchuk

Announcement

For immediate release: January 9, 2023

Judson Howie LLP is pleased to announce that Jeffrey C. Marchuk will join the firm for the Winter 2023 term as part of his Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC) placement at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law at Lakehead University.

Mr. Marchuk's placement is somewhat of a homecoming. After growing up in Rainy River, Mr. Marchuk moved to Ottawa for university. He graduated from Carleton University in 2019 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in law and legal studies. He is currently in his final year of the three-year Juris Doctor program at Lakehead University.

Mr. Marchuk joins our firm after working for Peter Howie, Barrister & Solicitor, in the summer of 2022 and continuing part-time in Mr. Howie's office in the Fall 2022 term. Mr. Marchuk has already gained significant experience in family and criminal defence matters in that time.

A unique feature of the Lakehead University IPC program is that its graduates are not required to complete an articling placement after finishing law school in order to be called to the bar. By having the experiential portion of the lawyer licensing program integrated into the law school program through practice placements in their final year of study, students at Bora Laskin are eligible to be licensed as a lawyers after graduating from law school and writing the Law Society of Ontario's barrister and solicitor examinations.

Mr. Marchuk is the first Lakehead University law student to complete their practice placement in the Rainy River District in the 10 years since the law school opened its doors. We look forward to having Mr. Marchuk join our office this winter, and appreciate the important role that the Bora Laskin law school plays in supporting the renewal of the bar and ensuring ongoing access to justice and legal services in Northwestern Ontario and Treaty #3 territory.

Quotes:

"Jeffrey has done excellent work in support of my practice since last summer. We are delighted to have him join our new office this winter, and we hope that he will continue to practice in the region after he is called to the bar."

- Peter Howie (Lawyer, Judson Howie LLP)

"We talk about the 'greying' of the bar in many parts of Ontario, and the Rainy River District is no exception. The average age of our local lawyers has been steadily climbing. Having law students and new lawyers join practices in places like Fort Frances is critical to ensuring our communities maintain access to justice and affordable legal services."

- Douglas W. Judson (Lawyer, Judson Howie LLP & President, Rainy River District Law Association)
