Small-town Pride group writes to Ministers urging action on 2SLGBTQIA+ hate crimes

Statement on Behalf of a Client

For immediate release: February 21, 2024

Today Judson Howie LLP wrote to Ontario's Solicitor General and Attorney General on behalf of Rainbow Alliance Dryden (RAD), a 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride organization based in Northwestern Ontario.

RAD's letter urges the province to take steps to ensure that police and prosecutors are equipped to respond to the growing prevalence of hatred and threats of violence targeting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The letter follows an inappropriate police investigation of RAD's September 2022 drag story time event based on a false complaint, which has been followed by over 17 months of inaction related to actual threats of violence targeting RAD and their community concerning the same event.

RAD's letter also follows a February 15, 2024 report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, warning of the escalating threat of violence and terrorism targeting the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

RAD's letter to the Ministers can be viewed and downloaded here.
